One of the longest, best-shaped lefts in the islands, and among the most consistent. A thick-lipped barrel section up on the reef gives way to long, fast walls made for turns, and a softer shoulder down the inside. It holds its shape as the swell builds.

A fast, near-perfect right that runs down a shallow reef. The take-off section, which surfers call the Office, throws the double-ups that lead straight into the barrel. It does not wait for anyone, and the inside is unforgiving. On its day, there is nothing else like it.

Beginner friendly Intermediate Short ride
Its own wave on its own beach, a short ride from the villas. It shares a name with our doorstep left, and that is where the resemblance ends. The friendlier of the two: forgiving on the small days, and genuinely rewarding once there is some size behind it.

Sand instead of reef, a short ride east along the coast. Softer lips and far more room for error, the place to shake off the travel, find your rhythm, or put someone on their first proper wave without a reef underneath them.

Intermediate Advanced Minutes away
A point break that rewards patience and a good line. Long walls that ask you to generate your own speed, and it holds its shape as the swell fills in, a clear step down from Hollow Trees in consequence without being tame.

A fun reef break out along the Kaliet coast, reached by motorbike on the coast road. It works across a wide range of swell sizes, which makes it the natural call on days when the marquee breaks are doing too much.

The Sipora coastline holds more than the names on this page. There are reefs that only switch on at a certain tide, corners that need a particular swell direction, and a few we prefer to keep for ourselves. We prefer it that way. Ask when you arrive, and we will point you at whatever is working that week.

The swell window never really closes.

Thirty years of data say the same thing every month: the swell arrives from the south-south-west all year, and what changes is only how big. The line is the average wave height offshore; the figure under each month is the share of days that reach two metres or more.

June through September is the biggest, most consistent stretch, when the majority of days can be overhead. April is the glassiest month in the record, and from November to March the north-west monsoon blows offshore at the rights, with fun-sized days and almost nobody out.

Respect the reef
These are reef breaks. Booties are recommended. Reef cuts heal slowly in the tropics, so take care on entry and exit.

Bring a quiver
Conditions range from waist-high to well overhead. Bring a quiver that covers both. Fins, leashes and wax are hard to source on the island, so come prepared.

Respect the locals
The Mentawai Islands have a local surf community. Respect in the water goes a long way. Share the peak, be patient, and you'll be welcome back.
