Itacoatiara and the Mentawai sit half a planet apart and are organised around the same thing: the few seconds that fit inside a hollow wave. One is a stretch of Atlantic sand where the offshore draws the wall. The other is a reef in front of our deck, in the middle of the Indian Ocean.
Tunel Crew built Brazil's first barrel contest at Itacoatiara, and they run it in a way we recognise: waiting on the ocean, respecting the place, and inviting the people who understand the wave. Sponsoring the Tunel Crew contest is the most direct way we have of standing close to that, and of bringing the leaderboard champion over to see the other side of the same obsession.
Niterói, Brazil
A kilometre and a half of sand between two granite headlands, wide open to the Atlantic. It is rated among the heaviest beach breaks in the world: fast, hollow, and with very little water between the wave and the sand. It turns classic on a high tide with the offshore.
Sipora, Mentawai
Kali Villas sits on the sand, with Bintang's Left breaking in front of the deck. Lance's Right (HT's) and Lance's Left are seven minutes down the road. Reef, warm water, and swell all year. This is where the leaderboard champion spends ten nights.
The contest started in 2018, modelled on Hawaii's Backdoor Shootout, and has become the best-known barrel contest in Brazil. Thirty invited athletes, one day of competition, called whenever Itacoatiara decides to wake up. Whoever wins takes the title of Tunel Hero.
Scores come from time spent inside the wave, how deep the barrel was, and the commitment it took to get in. Turns on the open face count for little: the criterion here is how long you stayed out of sight.
The 2026 window runs from 10 July to 10 October. The organisers watch the charts and call everyone in once the forecast lines up, so the edition lands on the best day the period has to offer.
The opening heats feed one overall leaderboard rather than a knockout draw, and the best scores carry through to the semi and the final. For 2026 the decider moves to four surfers in the water at once.
You can sleep to the sound of Bintang's Left without topping the leaderboard.
